Abstract

One of the sociological ideas put forward in the novel Laskar Pelangi is, There is a hidden potential in poor communities in Indonesia that need only be awakened and given the opportunity (especially education) and inspiration enough to be equal to Western society. On the recommendation of René and Wellek, this paper examines this unity of mind with the elements of the novel and its impact which results in the book as literature. Three elements were chosen as the focus for this study, namely plot, characterization of Latitude, and characterization of Ikal. While this idea reinforces the story through unity with the groove and characterization of Ikal, characterizing latitude is pushed too far, so this figure becomes superhuman and hard.
