Abstract
The research was carried out in class V Elementary School District 15 Water Saleh Banyuasin, consisting of 19 students. The problem in this study is how the ability of students to use effective sentence contained in the narrative essay. Data sources of this study is narrative essay. Data collected by the technique of guided writing test. The results showed that there is an error in the narrative essay effective sentences that include errors unity, cohesion (coherence), keparalelean, accuracy, effectiveness, and kelogisan. Factors causing the error is due to the influence of students' first language, the language that students use everyday, students are less menguasaan Indonesian subject matter, and students practice writing a lot less. Based on the observations of researchers, most errors are errors made by the student union, especially the error predicate sentences preceded by the words, while the fewest mistakes done by students is an error kelogisan.
