Abstract

Vocabulary is the main key to learning a language, especially English. Vocabulary mastery will make it easier for someone to analyze and understand a reading or text. Understanding of vocabulary is needed in understanding a sentence context. The effect of understanding vocabulary on the contents of a text is very large. This study aims to see the effect of understanding individual vocabulary on a text. The text used is the story of “Kancil and The Crocodile”. The sample that used was 34 students of class V Elementary School 191 Palembang. Each students was given time to read the text and answer several meanings of vocabulary that used in the text. The results obtained were 28 children from 34 children answered with perfect scores above the average. The average student score obtained is 80.88 with a median of 84.32 and mode 96.82. The percentage obtained from the results is 82.35% of students get a score above 76, 8.82% of students get a value between 51- 75 and 8.82% of students get a value between 26-50. The results of 80.88% have shown that mastery of vocabulary for a child can affect the level of one's understanding the contents of the text and the meaning of the text.
