Abstract

The main purpose of this study was to find out whether or not the students of English study program of Universitas Bina Darma committed syntactical errors in their free-writings and to find out the probable causes of the syntactical errors found in their free- writings. The samples were all of seventh semester students of English study program of Universitas Bina Darma. In collecting the data, the writer used the writing test and distributed questionnaires. Then, the obtained data were analyzed based on Linguistic Category Taxonomy and Surface Strategy Taxonomy and by means of percentage formula. The results of the study showed that the students of English study program of Universitas Bina Darma did commit syntactical errors in their free-writing. The most frequent errors were errors on verb to verb constructions and misformation errors. In this study, the researchers also found four possible causes of syntactical errors made by the research subjects. The causes were: first; the level of students’ understanding of English grammatical rules which is still low which became the difficulty for the students when it came for them to write, second, the students’ L1 transfer that might interfere their English learning, and third; the slank words and ungrammatical sentences students get used to when they write for fun on the internet; and the lecturers The lecturers rarely give feedback the students when they write in English and monotonous teaching and learning strategy in English, which made the students less motivated to practice writing in English. The result of this study is expected to contribute something for the teaching of writing and structure at English study program of Universitas Bina Darma.
