Abstract
The expressions under the radical in the above Eqn. are always positive, thus both roots are real. For convenience: 1 is always taken as the smaller of the two solutions. As the fundamental frequency of a 1 DOF system is the frequency of free vibrations of the system (i.e. the frequency the system “likes”), 1 and 2 are the frequencies at which the 2-DOF system wants to vibrate in when it is in free vibrations.
