Abstract

The objectives of conducting this research were to identify the polysemous words used by the main characters in “This Means War” movie, to describe the meanings of polysemous words used in “This Means War” movie, and to find out the most dominant kinds of polysemy used in “This Means War” movie. The researcherss used qualitative method with descriptive approach in this study. The researchers used the theory of polysemy of Menfred Krifka (1998) and theory of meaning of Geoffrey Leech (1983) in analyzing the use of polysemous words in the movie. The result of the findings showed that there were 30 polysemous words used by the main characters. Those 30 polysemous words fall into three categories of polysemous word from seven kinds of polysemy. There were 4 polysemous words in containers/contained alternation category, 23 polysemous words in figure/ground reversal category, and 3 polysemous words in alternation involving location category.
