Abstract
ABSTRACT Currently alarming condition is the reduction in the land area to produce staple foods due to land conversion. In addition, the level of increased food productivity is also difficult because of the diversity of types of food staples of the narrow and concentrated only on the rice. Until now, the problem seems to be difficult to achieve food self-sufficiency, sustainable self-sufficiency in rice destined to fail because the last 3 years Indonesia has been importing rice, a surplus of 10 million tons of rice is also difficult to achieve. The role of small and medium enterprises need to be strengthened by making use of local food that does not rely on rice.This review is to clarify the role of food security by strengthening small and medium enterprises, and describes the obstacles often faced by these businesses in meeting local food, and the solutions offered to overcome these constraints. The scope of the review that the food security needs to be developed further, although the total responsibility of the government through regulation and food policies, but need to be strengthened through the role of small and medium enterprises in the local food receipts, because small business is a business that is able to survive during the financial crisis of 1998, so UMKM expected small businesses as other small businesses can be strengthened through the ease / access in the financial sector, the local food supply, marketing and distribution, and the strengthening of creativity and innovation.
