Abstract

This research is motivated by students who often face the problem of indentifying characterization through the depiction of physical features, the mind of the author, incident response, author directly analyze, describe the state of the place or environment, describing the reaction antartokoh, and other opinion leaders about the main character). For that, we need to make students more active approach. one of the approaches that can be used is the contextual approach. The problem in this study is whether the application of the contextual approach can identify students' indentifying characterization in high school Muhammadiyah Palembang 5? The purpose of this study is to describe the contextual approach in indentifying characterization in high school students Muhammadiyah Palembang 5. The method used in this study is the experimental method. This is a population penelitiam XI IPS high school Muhammadiyah Palembang 5 as many as 61 people with a sample of 61 students, the research data obtained through test. Data were analyzed using analysis of test data description. Based on the results of the discussion, it is concluded that a highly significant contextual approach to learning literature (an element of characterization through the depiction of physical features, the mind of the author, incident response, author directly analyze, describe the state of the place or environment, describing the reaction antartokoh, and other opinion leaders about key figures ). 5% as being significant. Based on student test results, after comparing the test results with a control class that obtained experimental class "to"> "TTable" ie 7.68> 2.00 at the 5% significance level with db 59. Thus, effective contextual approach used in teaching literature class XI High School Muhammadiyah Palembang 5
