Abstract
The phenomenon of globalization creates the competitive advantage in industry to engage in the coordination of value chain in global economics. The emergence rapid growth of communication and infrastructure has open the opportunity to the development of national industry including education industry. The strategy of the development in higher education depend on the resources in the country. This research aim is to mapping the higher education industry in Indonesia in the perspective of economic upgrading.Using random sampling from The ministry of research and higher education (forlap dikti), the research identified the process, product, functional upgrading and chain value regarding to define economic upgrading.The data translated within the comparison of relevan studies. The result show that indonesia higher education still oriented at the process and product upgrading. In order to strengthen the capacity of competitivenes and the existences of indonesia higher education, related parties should enhance the fuctional and chain value of higher education.
