Abstract

During the COVID-19 pandemic, unusual consumer behavior occurred, such as buying large quantities of basic necessities. The researchers investigated this behavior when fears of consumer market disruption start to occur in order to determine human behavior in this unique situation. Based on the stimulus-organism-response (SOR) framework, a structural model that links multiple online information sources (environmental stimuli) and two behavioral responses, unusual buying and self-isolation, was constructed. To test the proposed model, we collected data from 236 respondents in Indonesia through an online survey and conducted an analysis using PLS-SEM. The results of analysis show a strong correlation between self-isolation and intention to make an unusual purchase, and provide empirical evidence that the reported consumer behavior was directly related to the estimated time spent in self-isolation. Furthermore, results of the present study show that information overload was a strong predictor of cyberchondria. Perceived severity of situation and cyberchondria had a significant effect on people’s intentions to make unusual purchases and voluntary self-isolation.
